Chapter 13 - The Collapse of an Empire

Sirens wailed outside the high arched windows of the courthouse, their blue and red lights painting the mahogany walls in frantic flashes.
The heavy doors at the rear opened again, but this time it wasn't mercenaries. A dozen federal marshals in tactical vests, led by an Assistant United States Attorney, swept into the room, their badges glinting under the chandelier light.
""Evelyn Vance,"" the lead marshal called out, his weapon unholstered at the low ready. ""Step away from the podium and place your hands behind your back. We have an unsealed federal indictment for corporate espionage, maritime drug trafficking, and the premeditated murder of Julian Sterling.""
Evelyn stood paralyzed on the dais, her manicured fingers trembling as Ethan released his grip. She looked around the room, searching for an ally, an escape, a friendly face among the sea of flashing cameras. Her attorneys looked down at the floor, refusing to meet her gaze.
""You have no proof,"" she hissed, her voice a hollow, venomous rasp as the marshals closed in. ""That tape is hearsay! The ledger is forged!""
Elena stepped forward, pulling a small sealed medical container from her breast pocket. Inside rested a single broken syringe fragment containing the remnants of the blue neurotoxin.
""This compound was extracted from your private suite last night,"" Elena said clearly, projecting to the marshals and the press alike. ""It matches the chemical markers found in Julian Sterling’s autopsy toxicology report, which your family had illegally sealed three months ago. The chain of custody is verified by federal clinical standards.""
A marshal stepped onto the dais, snapping steel handcuffs around Evelyn’s slender wrists. The metallic click echoed like a gunshot through the silent room.
As they dragged her toward the side exit, Evelyn twisted in their grip, her hair falling wild over her face, her eyes burning with feral, unadulterated hatred as she glared at Elena.
""You think you’ve won, nurse?"" Evelyn spat, blood trickling from her lip where she had bitten it in fury. ""My father’s network reaches deeper than the federal court! You'll never walk down a public street without looking over your shoulder! Neither of you will survive the month!""
Elena met her gaze without blinking. ""I spent three years hunting you in the dark, Evelyn. You're the one going into a cage.""
Evelyn was hauled through the heavy reinforced doors, her shrill curses fading into the corridors beyond.
Ethan stood alone behind the podium. The press room remained pin-drop silent, every journalist waiting for the young heir's next word.
Ethan looked down at the ledger, then out at the cameras. ""My father spent his life building a name that stood for integrity on the water. That name was dragged into the mud by greed and poison. Starting today, the Sterling Trust is liquidated into a public medical research foundation dedicated to victims of clinical malpractice and synthetic poisoning. Julian Sterling’s legacy will not be an empire of shipping containers—it will be an empire of healing.""
He turned away from the podium and walked steadily down the steps of the dais toward Elena.

As soon as they passed through the private security corridor behind the auditorium, Ethan’s knees suddenly buckled.
Elena caught him instantly, taking his weight against her shoulder as his legs gave out completely. The neuro-stimulant had worn off.
