Chapter 9 - The Ghost Tide

The cold waters of the Blackwood Canal churned black and hostile beneath the wooden pier.

Elena and Ethan tumbled down the rotted timber pilings onto the narrow deck of an old commercial oyster skiff moored beneath the docks. Thomas followed, gasping for breath as he cast off the mooring lines with hurried, trembling fingers.

Bullets pinged off the harbor wall above them, sending sharp stone chips flying into the dark water.

""Get the engine started!"" Ethan yelled, holding his balance against the swaying gunwale. His legs burned with lactic acid and neural fatigue, but the adrenaline overrode the collapse.

Elena ripped the tarp off the ancient inboard diesel engine and pulled the choke. She turned the corroded ignition key. The starter motor clicked, wheezed, but refused to turn over.

""Come on!"" she hissed, striking the battery terminal with her wrench.

Above them, two mercenaries vaulted over the pier railing, landing heavily on the wooden dock planks ten feet from the skiff. They raised their weapons, red laser sights cutting through the coastal fog, sweeping directly across Elena’s chest.

Ethan threw himself in front of her, shielding her with his broad frame, raising an iron boat hook to strike.

Before the mercenaries could fire, Thomas surged forward with a heavy wooden oar, sweeping the first guard’s legs out from under him. The guard plunged into the dark, freezing bay with a heavy splash. The second guard turned his rifle toward Thomas and pulled the trigger.

The muffled crack of the gunshot was swallowed by the sudden roar of the skiff's engine finally firing to life.

""Thomas!"" Ethan cried.

The old man stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder as dark crimson bloomed across his woolen sweater. But he didn't fall. With his remaining strength, he kicked the skiff's throttle lever forward and shoved the wooden bow hard away from the dock into the rushing tide.

""Go, Master Ethan! Get to Boston!"" Thomas choked, collapsing onto the dock planks as the boat surged out into the deep channel.

""Thomas!"" Ethan screamed, trying to reach out across the expanding gap of black water, but Elena grabbed his jacket, hauling him down beneath the gunwale as bullets tore through the fiberglass cabin.

""We can't go back, Ethan! We'll die in the crossfire!"" Elena shouted, her hands wrenching the wooden steering wheel, steering the skiff into the dense bank of maritime fog that blanketed the bay.

The searchlights from the docks swept across the water, but the heavy white mist swallowed the boat whole within thirty yards. The gunfire dwindled into distant pops, replaced by the rhythmic chugging of the diesel engine and the mournful groan of harbor foghorns.

Ethan fell to his knees in the bilge water, staring back at the vanishing shoreline, his chest heaving with silent, ragged sobs. He had lost his father, his home, and now the only man who had remained loyal through his darkest year.

Elena knelt beside him, wrapping an arm around his soaked shoulders. ""We make Evelyn pay for this, Ethan. Tomorrow. In front of the entire world.""

Ethan looked up, wiping the salt spray from his eyes. His jaw was set like carved granite.

""Teach me,"" he said, his voice deadly quiet.

""Teach you what?""

""Teach me how to make them bleed without leaving a trace.""
