Chapter 1 - The Shattered Balustrade

The echo of Eleanor Bennett’s breathless cry hung in the cavernous atrium long after the horrifying drop had ended. On the polished marble floor four floors down, Julian Bennett remained on his knees, his tailored tuxedo scuffed, breathing in ragged gasps against the infant’s warm chest. Little Lily gave a tiny, startled hiccup, her soft fingers clutching the silk lapel of his jacket. High above, standing along the cold mahogany railing, Eleanor watched her mother-in-law, Victoria Bennett, frozen in an uncharacteristic stupor.

The heavy cream envelope with the gold wax seal remained extended in Eleanor’s hand. The seal—the insignia of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the state genetic registry—bore an unbroken crimson ribbon beneath the wax.

"Take it, Victoria," Eleanor said, her voice stripped of panic, replaced by an unsettling, glacial calm. "Look at what you almost threw away."

Victoria’s manicured fingers trembled as she tore the seal. Her aristocratic mask splintered as she read the lines: genetic matching confirmation, parentage validation, and an official hospital transfer certificate dated five months earlier. The paper proved that Lily was indeed of Bennett blood—Julian’s biological daughter—and that the rumors Victoria had weaponized to cast Eleanor out were engineered fabrications.

Julian’s footsteps pounded up the grand spiral staircase. He reached the mezzanine, holding Lily securely against his chest. His eyes, fixed on his mother, held no anger—only an absolute, chilling finality.

"You dropped her," Julian said simply.

"Julian, you don't understand what I was told—" Victoria began, clutching the paper to her silk dress.

"I understand everything," Julian replied, stepping beside Eleanor. "You chose pride over a human life. We are done."
