Chapter 11 - The Courtroom in Manhattan

The legal battle did not take place in private boardrooms, but in a solemn family court in Lower Manhattan. Victoria Bennett sat at the plaintiff's table, flanked by three senior litigators. She wore a sharp charcoal designer suit, her silver hair styled immaculately, yet she looked noticeably frail, her sharp cheekbones hollowed.

When Julian and Eleanor entered, Victoria did not look up.

Victoria’s attorney argued passionately that Victoria was a devoted matriarch being unjustly alienated from her sole grandchild due to petty family disagreements, claiming that the child’s long-term welfare required connection to her ancestral heritage and resources.

When Julian’s counsel called Clara Hayes to the stand, Victoria’s posture stiffened.

Document by document, Clara laid bare the years of calculated interference: the forged medical reports, the surveillance invoices, and the draft trust amendments written weeks before Lily’s birth. The climax came when the court reviewed security footage from that fateful night at the atrium—the footage Victoria had claimed was deleted, but which Clara had preserved on an encrypted drive.

The screen showed the mezzanine balustrade, Victoria wrenching the baby away, and her hands releasing the bundle over the drop before Julian made his desperate slide.

The courtroom fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
