Chapter 14 - Foundations of Grace

Three years passed. The quiet life in Maine flourished into something rich and enduring. Eleanor’s art was now featured in major galleries throughout New England, and Julian had partnered with a local boatbuilder, finding fulfillment in craftsmanship and honest labor.
Lily had grown into a vibrant, inquisitive little girl with wild curls and bright, fearless hazel eyes. She knew the names of every gull that nested on the cliffs and spent her afternoons helping Julian repair wooden skiffs down at the harbor.
One evening, news arrived from New York: Victoria Bennett had passed away quietly in a private nursing facility, attended only by medical staff. She had left her remaining personal estate to various philanthropic committees that had long since distanced themselves from her name.
Julian took a solitary walk along the rocky beach that night. He felt no vindication, nor joy. He simply felt grief for what might have been if love had not been suffocated by pride. When he returned to the house, Eleanor was waiting by the front door with a warm mug of cider.
