Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Circle

On Lily’s fifth birthday, the cottage was filled with music, laughter, and the scent of homemade strawberry cake. Sheriff Thomas sat on the porch swapping stories with Clara Hayes, who had permanently relocated to Havenbrook, living in a cozy apartment two doors down from the bakery. Half the town had gathered on the lawn, bringing handmade toys and freshly caught seafood.
Lily ran across the grass, her laughter rising above the sound of the ocean waves, chasing fireflies that flickered in the dusk.
Julian and Eleanor stood together near the edge of the garden, their arms wrapped around each other’s waists. The memory of that terrifying mezzanine, the cold drop, and the sealed envelope felt like scenes from another lifetime—a storm that had tested their foundation and left only what was unbreakable.
"What are you thinking about?" Eleanor asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Julian looked down at his daughter, who was proudly handing a dahlia to Clara, her face lit with uncomplicated joy.
"I was thinking about lineage," Julian said softly. "My mother believed that blood was a chain that bound people to duty, pride, and control. But that was never true."

Eleanor smiled, kissing his cheek. "And what is it really?"
Julian tightened his hold on her, watching Lily’s radiant smile beneath the evening sky. "It’s a promise," he replied. "A promise to protect, to heal, and to love without conditions. And that promise begins right here."
