Chapter 2 - The Night Air of Freedom

They walked out of the Bennett Estate into the cool October midnight. Behind them, the wrought-iron gates groaned shut, separating them from the manicured lawns and towering stone facade that had felt like a gilded cage for three years. Julian carried Lily wrapped securely inside his wool overcoat, while Eleanor held only a single duffel bag containing essential documents, baby clothes, and a few family photographs.
"Where do we go?" Julian asked as they hailed a taxi along the quiet boulevard. His black tuxedo felt absurd against the gritty backdrop of city streets.
"Anywhere that doesn't carry your family's name," Eleanor said quietly. Her fingers found his, gripping tightly. "A place where Lily can breathe without being measured against an empire."
They checked into a modest, unassuming hotel on the edge of town, far from the affluent districts controlled by the Bennett conglomerate. In the sterile quiet of the room, Julian carefully laid Lily on the bed. For the first time in hours, he allowed himself to break down, resting his forehead against the mattress while tears soaked the cotton sheets.
Eleanor sat beside him, placing a gentle hand on his back. "You saved her, Julian. In every way that mattered."
