Chapter 4 - A New Horizon

Two weeks later, an old station wagon carried the young family across state lines into the coastal town of Havenbrook, Maine. The town was a stark contrast to the sterile opulence of Manhattan; it smelled of salt air, pine needles, and fresh rain. Julian and Eleanor used the modest savings from Eleanor’s pre-marital accounts—money Victoria had never been able to touch—to lease a small weatherboard cottage overlooking the bay.

Julian spent his days learning things he had never been taught: how to repair drafty window sills, how to split firewood, and how to cook simple meals on an antique gas stove. The corporate spreadsheets that had once consumed sixty hours of his week were replaced by the cadence of Lily’s sleep schedules.

Eleanor, an artist who had abandoned her brushes under Victoria’s constant criticism, unpacked her easels in the sunlit loft above the kitchen. The light in Havenbrook was clear and forgiving.

One evening, as the tide washed against the pebbles below, Eleanor watched Julian rocking Lily to sleep by the hearth.

"You don't miss it, do you?" she asked.

Julian smiled, kissing the soft crown of his daughter’s head. "For the first time in my life, I don't feel like an imposter."
