Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Visitor

Summer returned to Havenbrook, bringing warm breezes and blooming hydrangeas. One bright Tuesday morning, a taxi pulled up to the foot of the cottage driveway. Julian was outside sanding the porch railings when the door opened.

It was not Victoria, nor an attorney. Stepping out was Clara Hayes, Victoria’s longtime personal housekeeper and confidante of over thirty years. She carried an old leather valise and walked with the aid of a cane.

Julian hurried down the steps. "Clara? What happened? Did she send you?"

Clara looked at Julian with tired, compassionate eyes. "No, Master Julian. I resigned last week. I couldn't stay in that house anymore."

Eleanor emerged from the kitchen carrying Lily, surprised by the arrival. Clara’s eyes welled with tears as she saw the healthy, giggling toddler.

"I brought something you need to see," Clara said, patting the valise. "Something that will protect this child forever."
