Chapter 1 - The Midnight Pavement

The heavy oak door of the penthouse suite clicked shut with a sound as hollow as a gunshot.

Clara Vance stood in the carpeted hallway of the high-rise tower, clutching the crisp sheets of the legal settlement against her chest. Her feet were bare against the polished marble floor. Behind that closed door, Julian had already tossed his leather belt onto the nightstand, pouring two crystal tumblers of scotch while Evelyn leaned against the headboard, laughing with that breathless, predatory satisfaction.

Clara took a breath. For seven years, Julian’s anger had been an encroaching winter, freezing her thoughts, whittling down her confidence until she genuinely believed she was nothing without his name. But as the elevator glided silently down sixty floors, watching her hollow reflection in the mirrored brass, she saw something unfamiliar flicker behind her hazel eyes: the quiet, stubborn embers of survival.

She stepped out into the biting November chill of downtown Seattle. The rain had softened into a misty drizzle, slicking the pavement. The city lights smeared in puddles of gold and crimson. Every step on the wet concrete was a shock of cold against the arches of her bare feet, yet with every stride, the invisible suffocating band around her chest loosened. She possessed nothing except the signed papers relinquishing all claims to Julian’s estate, eighty-four dollars folded inside her pocket, and her life.

She did not cry. Crying was an indulgence reserved for those who still hoped to be rescued. Tonight, Clara knew she would have to rescue herself.
