Chapter 11 - The Plea on Bent Knees

Late the following evening, Clara exited her design studio into the quiet courtyard of Verdant Haven. The night was crisp, scented with lavender and damp cedar from the newly planted rain gardens.

A dark figure stepped out from the shadows near the gated archway.

""Clara.""

She stopped. Julian stood before her, wrapped in an unkempt trench coat. The sharp, arrogant billionaire was gone; in his place stood a broken, haggard man with dark circles under his eyes and stubble across his sunken cheeks.

""Julian,"" Clara said evenly. Her voice had no tremor, no hatred, and no fear. It was as calm as still water.

""Clara, please... you have to listen to me,"" Julian stammered, taking a desperate step forward. ""The Apex Tower... the city is revoking the permit. The banks are foreclosing on everything. Even the penthouse is going up for auction. Evelyn tried to rob me and she’s facing wire-fraud indictments.""

""I heard,"" Clara said gently.

Julian fell to his knees on the stone pathway—the exact posture she had occupied six months earlier when he stood over her with a belt. Tears welled in his eyes as he looked up at her. ""I was wrong, Clara. I was blind! You were the real genius all along. Come back to the firm. We can re-file the patents together. I'll put your name on the building. I'll give you whatever you want. Just... please don't let me lose everything.""

Clara looked down at him. For months, she had wondered how she would feel if she ever saw Julian brought low. She thought she might feel vengeance, or bitter satisfaction.

Instead, all she felt was profound pity.

""Julian,"" she said softly, crouching down so she was at eye level with him. ""You didn't lose everything because of the tower. You lost everything the moment you believed people were things to be owned and crushed.""

""Clara... please..."" he choked out.

""Get up, Julian,"" she said with quiet authority. ""Stand up on your own feet. You signed away your right to lean on me the night you forced me to sign away mine.""

She stood up, turned her back on him, and walked away into the warm light of her studio. She didn't look back once.
