Chapter 14 - The Opening of the Living Canopy

The grand opening of The Living Canopy Community Center took place on a glorious Saturday in August.
Thousands of citizens gathered beneath the sweeping timber-and-glass roof. Children ran laughing through the splash pads fed by recycled rainwater; elders sat on shaded benches surrounded by blooming indigenous flora; local bakers and artisans sold their wares from modular stalls powered by solar glass tiles.
Dr. Hallowell, Clara's former greenhouse boss, was there, now serving as the head botanist of the municipal garden system. Frank, the diner owner who had offered a cold girl a warm towel and four-dollar biscuits on the worst night of her life, stood near the front, proudly wearing his Sunday suit as Clara’s guest of honor.
When Clara took the stage to address the crowd, she did not speak of engineering awards or financial metrics.

""We live in a world that often teaches us that power is measured by what you can take, whom you can dominate, and how loudly you can shout,"" Clara said into the microphone, her voice carrying across the sun-drenched courtyard. ""But nature teaches us a different lesson. The strongest trees are not those that crowd out the light of others. The strongest trees are those that root deeply in the earth, weather the winter frost, share their nutrients through hidden networks, and offer shelter to those caught in the storm.""
The crowd rose to their feet in thunderous, unprompted applause. Tears touched Clara’s eyelashes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated gratitude.
