Chapter 6 - Whispers in High Society

Across town in the gilded ballroom of the St. Regis, Julian Vance raised a glass of champagne beside Evelyn Reed. The local business gazette had just dubbed Julian the ""Green Visionary of the Pacific Northwest.""

Evelyn, adorned in a diamond necklace Julian had purchased with credit drawn against his commercial holdings, beamed beside him for the cameras. ""To the Vance Apex Tower,"" she purred, kissing his cheek. ""The future of urban luxury.""

Yet beneath his crisp tuxedo, Julian’s stomach churned with an unshakeable knot of anxiety.

Earlier that morning, his lead engineer had cornered him in the site trailer. The complex load-bearing atrium of the Apex Tower—a direct derivative of sketches Julian had torn from Clara’s private sketchbook years ago—was failing structural load simulations. The biophilic atrium couldn't support the glass spire without cracking under lateral wind sheer.

""Where are the supplementary tension formulas, Julian?"" his engineer had demanded. ""The ones that account for the living root moisture density? We can't pour the foundation without them.""

""I have them in my personal files,"" Julian had lied, his voice snapping with defensive fury. ""Just proceed with the standard concrete core!""

Standing in the glittering ballroom, Julian looked around the room, expecting to feel invincible. Instead, he felt an eerie emptiness. For years, Clara had sat silently in his corner office, quietly fixing his spreadsheets, rewriting his proposals, and solving his impossible design paradoxes while he took the credit. He had convinced himself that she was an anchor dragging him down.

Now, with the cameras flashing in his face, he realized with a cold stab of terror that the anchor had been the only thing holding his ship together.
