Chapter 2 - The Neon Sanctuary

Four blocks away, beneath a flickering neon sign reading Al’s 24-Hour All-American Diner, Clara pushed open the glass door. A bell chimed gently above her head.

The warmth inside smelled of toasted rye, dark roast coffee, and seasoned griddles. Behind the laminate counter stood Frank, a man in his late sixties with silver whiskers, kind eyes, and hands worn rough by decades of honest work. He looked at Clara—her rumpled silk blouse, her dark trousers, her bare, rain-streaked feet. He didn't ask questions, nor did he judge.

""Booth by the radiator is open, miss,"" Frank said softly, wiping down a mug with a clean rag. ""Floor heater works best there.""

""I... I only have a few dollars,"" Clara whispered, her voice still rough from the hours of silence.

""A cup of black coffee and a plate of hot biscuits cost four dollars here,"" Frank replied with an easy, grandfatherly smile. ""And clean warm towels come on the house.""

Moments later, Clara sat in the corner booth, wrapping her frozen feet in warm, dry cotton. When Frank set down the steaming ceramic mug, she wrapped both hands around it, letting the heat seep into her bones. She pulled out the legal document. Julian had forced her to sign away the penthouses, the cars, and the shared offshore trusts. But in his arrogant haste, fueled by Evelyn's greedy whisperings, he had overlooked a single rider attached to the back: Clara’s original pre-marital intellectual property—the dormant patents for biophilic modular architecture she had drawn before Julian ever made his first million on her ideas.

Julian thought he had stripped her to the bone. In reality, he had handed back the only piece of her that truly mattered.
