Chapter 9 - The Accidental Encounter

The Northwest Architectural Excellence Gala was held at the Seattle Waterfront Pavilion. It was the premier event of the season, attended by civic leaders, innovators, and international journalists.
Julian arrived alone. Evelyn had refused to accompany him after his primary credit lines were suspended. Desperate to maintain appearances and secure a private bailout, Julian walked into the grand room, clutching his drink like a lifeline.
The room erupted into polite, fervent applause.
At the center podium stood Arthur Montgomery, holding a silver medallion. ""Tonight’s grand honor for Revolutionary Public Architecture does not go to a multi-billion-dollar luxury high-rise,"" Arthur announced into the microphone. ""It goes to a visionary who reminded us that true architecture serves humanity, heals our environment, and lifts the weary spirit.""
The spotlight swung away from the stage and illuminated a woman walking gracefully down the center aisle.
Julian froze, his glass slipping an inch in his fingers.
It was Clara.

She wore an elegant, understated emerald-green gown that complemented her natural poise. Her dark wavy hair fell over her shoulders in soft, healthy waves. Her chin was held high, her hazel eyes bright with an unshakeable, luminous calm. There was no trace of the broken, terrified woman who had sat cross-legged on his bedroom carpet pleading for mercy. She looked like royalty who had walked through fire and emerged forged in gold.
As she took the stage to a standing ovation, Julian felt an icy, suffocating weight crush his chest. The entire room was looking at her with reverence—the very reverence he had spent his whole life craving and failing to earn.
