Chapter 8 - The Cracks in the Penthouse

By late spring, the cracks in Julian’s world were no longer metaphorical.
Construction on the Vance Apex Tower ground to an abrupt halt when city inspectors issued an emergency stop-work order. Without Clara’s proprietary tension-distribution calculations, the third-story cantilever had shifted by two inches, creating hairline fractures along the main load-bearing pillars.
The financial banks panicked. Investors who had poured tens of millions into the high-profile project demanded immediate audits.
In the penthouse bedroom where Clara had once knelt barefoot on the carpet, the atmosphere was suffocating.
""What do you mean the permits are frozen?"" Evelyn shrieked, throwing an expensive crystal vase against the wall, where it shattered into glittering shards. ""The banks are freezing your accounts! Do you have any idea what my family will say if your firm goes under?""
Julian sat on the edge of the unmade bed, his shirt unbuttoned, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. ""It was her,"" he muttered, running trembling hands through his disheveled hair. ""Clara hid the secondary calculation notebooks before she left. She sabotaged me.""

""Clara left with eighty dollars and no shoes six months ago!"" Evelyn spat, her glamorous veneer dissolving into pure venom. ""You claimed you were the mind behind the company, Julian! You promised me a real estate empire, not a mountain of subpoenas!""
Julian looked at Evelyn, seeing her clearly for the first time without the lens of his vanity. There was no affection in her eyes, no loyalty, no warmth. She had only ever loved the reflection of his wealth.
