Chapter 10 - Evelyn's Desperation

While Julian lingered in the shadows of the gala, Evelyn was at his downtown corporate office, feverishly working behind his desk.

Using his master security passcodes, she accessed the firm’s offshore escrow accounts. Her plan was simple: transfer the remaining unencumbered capital—nearly four million dollars—to an account in the Cayman Islands under her own maiden name, pack her designer luggage, and catch a flight to Zurich before the federal regulators stepped in.

Her fingers danced over the keyboard. ""You fool, Julian,"" she whispered to the empty office. ""If you're going to sink, you won't take me down with you.""

She clicked Confirm Transfer.

A red warning flashed on the screen: TRANSACTION ABORTED. ASSETS UNDER JUDICIAL RECEIVERSHIP.

Evelyn gasped, slamming her manicured hands onto the desk.

The door to the executive office swung open. Two federal agents, flanked by the building’s private security, walked inside.

""Evelyn Reed?"" the lead investigator asked calmly, displaying a badge. ""We have a federal warrant for the seizure of all electronic records related to Vance Development. Step away from the computer and keep your hands where we can see them.""

Evelyn backed away, her face pale as parchment, realizing that the house of cards hadn't just collapsed—it had been swallowed whole.
