Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vow

The bronze door of the bridal suite shut with a muted click that reverberated through the hallway like a gunshot. Audrey Sterling did not quicken her stride. Her diamond earrings swayed rhythmically against her neck, brushing the ivory lace of her collarbone. Down in the grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Tower, five hundred high-society guests—investors, foreign dignitaries, and members of the press—were sipping vintage champagne, completely unaware that the fairytale wedding of the decade had died five minutes ago.
Audrey lifted her phone to her ear. Her hand was steady, devoid of the trembling that usually accompanied betrayal. ""Arthur,"" she spoke into the receiver, her voice sharp as glass. ""Deploy security team four to the suite. No one enters or leaves until the audit files are secured.""
""Miss Sterling?"" her head of corporate security answered, startled. ""The organist has already begun the prelude. Your father is waiting at the foyer doors.""
""Let him wait,"" Audrey said coldly. Behind her, heavy, frantic footsteps echoed along the carpeted corridor.
""Audrey! Stop!"" Michael’s voice cracked in desperation. He ran toward her, his tuxedo shirt torn open at the throat, barefoot, having abandoned dignity entirely. ""It’s not what you think. Sophia slipped into the room—she set me up! You know the board votes on Monday. She works for Vance Enterprises!""
Audrey stopped. Slowly, she turned to face the man she had loved for four years—the boy from modest means whom she had elevated into the ranks of the Sterling conglomerate, handing him prestige, influence, and stock options.
""Sophia was wearing the sapphire pendant I gave you on our anniversary,"" Audrey noted, her tone so devoid of emotion it drained the blood from Michael’s face. ""The one locked in your private safe.""
Michael reached out, his fingers clutching the delicate lace sleeve of her wedding gown. ""I swear on my mother’s life, Audrey. We can smooth this over. Think of the merger! The stock will plummet fifty percent if you walk out now. You’ll destroy both our families!""
Audrey looked down at his hand gripping her dress. Disgust flared briefly behind her icy facade. With deliberate care, she gripped his wrist and twisted it away.
""The merger was contingent on trust, Michael. You were simply a conduit,"" she stated. ""Arthur,"" she spoke back into the phone, ""revoke his keycard access to the central building immediately.""

Before Michael could scream another excuse, the gold elevators chimed behind Audrey. The mirrored doors slid open, revealing not a security guard, but Julian Vance—the cutthroat CEO of Vance Enterprises and her father’s bitterest rival—holding a silver folder and smiling crookedly.
""Am I interrupting, Miss Sterling?"" Julian murmured. ""Because I believe you'll want to see what your groom actually traded away last night.""
