Chapter 2 - The Enemy’s Bargain

Julian Vance stepped out of the elevator cab, impeccably tailored in a charcoal suit that stood in stark contrast to Michael’s disheveled mess. His dark eyes darted briefly to Michael’s bare feet before fixing entirely on Audrey. The air between them hummed with tension; for years, the Sterling and Vance empires had clashed over city zoning, freight shipping lines, and technological patents.

""Julian,"" Audrey addressed him, refusing to show surprise. ""You aren't on the guest list.""

""Consider me an uninvited savior,"" Julian replied smoothly, extending the silver folder. ""You're about to walk down the aisle and surrender forty-nine percent of Sterling Logistics into a joint trust. What you don't know is that Michael has already leveraged those shares.""

Michael lunged forward, teeth bared in panic. ""Shut your mouth, Vance! Audrey, he’s lying! He wants to derail the public offering!""

Julian didn't flinch. He casually stepped aside as two private bodyguards in dark suits emerged from the service stairwell, physically restraining Michael against the velvet-papered wall.

""Check page four, Audrey,"" Julian said calmly, ignoring the curses spilling from the groom's lips.

Audrey opened the dossier. Her breath caught, just for a microsecond. Scanned bank receipts and offshore shell company registries stared back at her. Michael hadn't just taken a mistress in their bridal suite; he had entered a secret agreement to short Sterling stock immediately following the wedding announcements. By evening, a planted leak about accounting fraud would have tanked the shares, allowing an anonymous hedge fund—owned jointly by Michael and Sophia—to buy out the family assets at pennies on the dollar.

She had not been walking toward a marriage. She had been walking toward an execution.

Audrey raised her eyes, meeting Julian’s piercing gaze. ""How long have you had this?""

""Since two o'clock this morning,"" Julian answered. ""Sophia was sloppy. She forgot that my family owns the digital infrastructure of that hotel chain.""

""Why give it to me?"" Audrey asked, guarded. ""If Sterling fell, Vance Enterprises stood to inherit the entire eastern logistics corridor.""

Julian leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a dangerous murmur. ""Because I prefer defeating a worthy opponent, not watching a parasite poison her from within. Besides... I want something only you can give me.""

Before she could press him, the heavy service doors burst open. Her father, Richard Sterling, stood there, his face red with fury, flanked by four board members.

""Audrey! What the hell is going on up here?"" the patriarch demanded. ""The guests are demanding answers!""

Audrey looked at her father, then at the ruined groom pinned against the wall, and finally at Julian Vance. ""The wedding is canceled,"" she announced. ""And Michael is going to prison.""

Richard’s face paled. ""We can't survive this scandal. If you break the alliance, the Sterling dynasty crumbles by dawn.""

""Not necessarily,"" Julian interjected smoothly, extending his hand toward Audrey. ""Unless she walks down that aisle with someone else.""
