Chapter 11 - The Harbor Siege

Blinding white light and concussive shockwaves tore through the catwalk. Michael shrieked, dropping the shotgun as the deafening blast scrambled his senses. Sophia stumbled backward, hands clamped over her ears, while their private mercenaries blindly fired into the smoke.

Julian pulled Audrey to the ground behind a wall of steel freight containers as high-caliber rounds shredded the empty space where they had stood.

""That’s not the police!"" Julian shouted over the gunfire, pulling a spare magazine from his vest.

""Then who is it?"" Audrey demanded, her hand tightly gripping her weapon.

Through the pulverized windows, tactical ropes dropped from two unmarked black Sikorsky helicopters hovering over the harbor. Operatives clad in naval maritime gear slid down the lines with surgical speed. On their chest plates was the crest of Sterling Maritime—her family's private harbor enforcement division.

Leading the charge was Richard Sterling himself.

The seventy-year-old patriarch was not the frail, defeated old man who had sat horrified in the ballroom pews. He wore a heavy tactical slicker, carrying an automatic carbine, his jaw set with the ruthless resolve that had built an international shipping conglomerate from scratch.

""Stand down or be eliminated!"" Richard’s voice boomed over a tactical loudspeaker.

Sophia’s guards, caught in a deadly crossfire between Julian’s men on the warehouse floor and the Sterling maritime strike team descending from the roof, surrendered immediately, dropping their weapons onto the grated iron floor.

Michael scrambled on his hands and knees through the catwalk smoke, desperately crawling toward the fire escape exit. Audrey spotted him instantly.

""Audrey, wait!"" Julian called out, but she was already moving.

She sprinted up the iron spiral staircase at the corner of the warehouse, her boots clattering against the metal ruts. The adrenaline burned through her fatigue. She wasn't going to let him escape into the shadows; this ending had to be signed by her own hands.

She burst through the heavy steel door onto the rain-lashed rooftop.

Michael was stumbling toward an emergency ladder leading down to the docks. When he heard her footsteps, he turned around, drawing a small chrome revolver from his waistband with wild, terrified eyes.

""Stay back, Audrey! I swear I’ll kill you!"" he screamed into the storm, the rain plastering his hair to his forehead.

Audrey didn't slow down. She raised her firearm, two hands steady, laser-focused on his chest.

""Drop it, Michael,"" she said, her voice freezing the air between them. ""You don't have the stomach to pull that trigger when you have to look me in the eye.""

Michael’s arm shook violently. ""You ruined my life!""

""You ruined your own,"" Audrey countered, taking another step forward. ""Drop the gun, or you leave this roof in a body bag.""

Michael’s eyes darted past her toward the access door. He saw the silhouetted shapes of Richard Sterling and Julian Vance emerging. Realizing he was completely cornered, Michael's face contorted with pathetic desperation. He lowered the gun slightly, falling to his knees in the puddles.

""Audrey... please,"" he sobbed, the tough facade utterly broken. ""We can fix this. Tell them I was coerced. Sophia threatened my family... please, Audrey, I still love you!""

Audrey looked down at the man she was supposed to spend her life with. A profound sense of closure washed over her, washing away the lingering grief, leaving only pure, unyielding resolve.

""The wedding was canceled, Michael,"" Audrey whispered.

Before she could signal the guards to take him, the rooftop access door on the adjacent warehouse blew open, and a sniper's rifle barrel caught the pale moonlight.
