Chapter 6 - The Iron Cage

The impact sent the heavy SUV skidding sideways across the slick asphalt, slamming into an iron lamppost with a screech of crumpling metal. The side airbags deployed with explosive force, filling the cabin with white powder and the bitter scent of scorched nylon.

Audrey coughed violently, blinking away black spots in her vision. The SUV's engine hissed, dead. Through the shattered side window, she saw the black sedan that had rammed them; four men in tactical gear were already dismounting, their assault rifles raised.

""Julian!"" she gasped, reaching over.

Julian was unconscious, blood pooling through his fingers against the seat. He was dead weight. She couldn't drag him out in time.

Audrey snatched the silver thumb drive from the console and slipped it into the hidden inner pocket of her corset. Her survival instincts took over, replacing panic with cold calculation. She grabbed Julian’s fallen pistol from the floorboards, checked the chamber—three rounds left—and kicked open the driver's side door, rolling out into the freezing rain.

""Hold your fire! The boss wants her alive!"" a voice barked through the darkness.

Audrey scrambled behind the shelter of a concrete subway entrance. Rain plastered her blonde hair to her face, washing the blood from her ivory skirt down the granite steps. She aimed into the street. The lead mercenary advanced cautiously, his weapon lowered to hip level.

Audrey fired once. The bullet struck the pavement at the man's feet, showering his shins with concrete sparks and forcing him back behind his vehicle.

""Audrey! Stop fighting!"" a familiar voice called out from the second sedan.

The passenger door opened, and Michael stepped into the rain, holding an umbrella, accompanied by Sophia Hayes. Michael had changed into a dry overcoat, his hair slicked back, but his face was bruised and his eyes were wild with frantic adrenaline.

""It’s over, Audrey!"" Michael shouted across the empty avenue. ""The city police already have an arrest warrant with your name on it! Vance framed you for corporate sabotage. If you come with me, Sophia's father can make it disappear! You just have to sign the release forms for the maritime docks!""

Audrey gripped the cold steel of the pistol, stepping halfway out from the shadows of the subway entrance. The rain soaked through her clothes, but her posture was regal, terrifying in its absolute lack of fear.

""You really think I’m that stupid, Michael?"" she called back, her voice cutting through the downpour. ""I saw the offshore wire transfers. You aren't saving me. You're laundering Vance Senior's cartel money through our family port!""

Sophia stepped forward, a cruel smirk playing on her red lips. ""It doesn't matter what you know, Audrey. Look down the street.""

Audrey glanced toward the intersection. Three armored police vans were barricading the avenue, but their spotlights were not pointed at Michael. The blinding beams locked squarely onto her.

A loudspeaker boomed: ""Audrey Sterling, drop the weapon and put your hands behind your head! You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Julian Vance!""

Audrey looked down at her hands—covered in Julian's blood—and realized the trap was completely sealed.
