Chapter 3 - An Altar of Smoke

The gilded ballroom fell into a dead silence as the heavy oak doors swung inward. Five hundred heads turned simultaneously, expecting the culmination of high society's most celebrated romance. Music rose from the orchestra, but the tune faltered within seconds.
Audrey walked the crimson runner alone.
Her veil was pushed back, revealing high cheekbones carved from marble and eyes completely stripped of tenderness. Behind her walked not the nervous, smiling Michael Cole, but Julian Vance, carrying himself with predator-like composure. Whispers rippled across the pews like dry leaves caught in an oncoming gale.
Her father, sitting in the front row, stared in muted horror. His knuckles were white against his mahogany cane.
Audrey reached the marble dais where the officiant stood frozen, Bible held mid-air. She stepped past the altar, took the microphone from the podium, and turned to address the crowd. Her voice was amplified through the crystal chandeliers, crystal-clear and utterly unshakeable.
""Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming,"" Audrey began, the silence heavy enough to choke on. ""Today was meant to mark a union between two families and the merger of their respective enterprises. However, due to severe corporate embezzlement and contractual treason committed by Michael Cole, no wedding will take place.""
Gasps erupted across the hall. Cell phones were whipped out instantaneously; flashbulbs began popping against the ballroom mirrors. Reporters disguised as guests scrambled toward the front rows.
""Effective immediately,"" Audrey continued over the mounting murmur, ""all voting rights granted to Michael Cole are null and void. A formal criminal indictment has been submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission.""
She looked straight into the camera of a prominent financial broadcaster standing near the center aisle. ""Sterling Logistics remains sovereign. We will not be dismantled by cowards.""
She placed the microphone back on the stand. Beside her, Julian leaned down. ""Well played,"" he whispered under the deafening rising roar of the ballroom. ""Now come with me. The wolves will smell blood in ten seconds, and the front exit is crawling with reporters.""
Audrey gathered the heavy train of her gown in one hand. ""I don't run from my own company, Mr. Vance.""
May you like
""You do when Michael's associates aren't just financiers,"" Julian said quietly, his hand gripping her elbow with sudden urgency.
At that exact moment, every light in the Grand Regent Tower snapped off. Total, suffocating blackness swallowed the ballroom, followed instantly by the deafening sound of shattering glass from the mezzanine above.
