Chapter 12 - Broken Chess

""Sniper!"" Julian roared from the rooftop doorway, throwing his entire body weight forward despite his torn shoulder.
A heavy-caliber round ripped through the rain, striking Michael directly in the upper chest. The force of the impact threw the kneeling man backward across the slick gravel roof, his head slamming hard against the metal edge of an industrial ventilator.
Audrey dropped flat against the rooftop as Julian returned fire, his sidearm barking three rapid rounds toward the adjacent building. Richard Sterling signaled the helicopter circling above; a brilliant spotlight bathed the opposite roof in white light, revealing an operative in black who immediately abandoned his post and vanished down a service hatch.
Silence returned, broken only by the howl of the ocean wind and the heavy patter of rain.
Audrey crawled forward toward Michael.
He was choking, dark crimson bubbling past his lips onto the sodden collar of his designer shirt. His fingers weakly clawed at the wet gravel, his eyes searching blindly until they locked onto Audrey's face as she knelt beside him.
""Audrey..."" he wheezed, his voice bubbling with fluid. ""Sophia’s father... he never... he never intended... for me to survive...""
""Don't speak,"" Audrey said quietly, pressing her gloved hand against the wound, not out of affection, but out of an instinctive refusal to let him die before justice was fully served.
""The port keys..."" Michael gasped, his hand feebly grabbing her wrist with the faint remnants of his strength. ""Vault 9... at the terminal. It’s not just money... it’s... it’s chemical shipments. They’re using your ships... to move... unmonitored weapons...""
His body shuddered violently, a long, ragged exhale escaping his chest. His hand slipped from her wrist, splashing into the puddle beneath him. Michael Cole stared unblinkingly at the stormy sky, dead.
Audrey slowly stood up, letting the rain wash his blood from her skin for the second time that night.
Her father walked up behind her, placing a heavy, weathered hand on her shoulder. ""He was a traitor, Audrey. But he was right about one thing.""
Audrey turned to her father, her eyes narrowed. ""You knew about Vault 9?""
Richard’s face aged ten years under the harsh spotlight of the helicopter. ""I suspected. Senator Hayes approached our board six months ago demanding private routing through the eastern terminals. When I refused, he threatened to destroy the family. I thought... I thought pairing you with Michael would insulate the company by bringing in his political connections.""
Audrey looked at her father in disbelief. ""You used my marriage as a corporate shield?""
""I was trying to protect our legacy!"" Richard argued, his voice cracking with old guilt. ""I didn't know Michael was already on their payroll!""
Julian stepped forward, leaning heavily against the parapet wall, his face drawn. ""We don't have time for family reckonings. If Hayes has weapons moving through Vault 9 right now, he won't just cover his tracks. He will detonate that terminal to wipe out the evidence—and blame Sterling Logistics for an act of mass terror.""

Audrey checked the tactical watch on her wrist. It was 4:15 AM.
""The morning shipping shift begins at five,"" Audrey said, the cold executive taking full command once more. ""We have forty-five minutes to take back our port.""
