Chapter 4 - The Darkness Falls

Screams tore through the darkness of the grand ballroom as pandemonium erupted. Five hundred guests, blinded by the sudden blackout, tripped over tables and chairs in a desperate rush toward the emergency exits. The ambient glow of hundreds of smartphones cut erratic beams through the thick dust rising from the broken ceiling.

""Audrey!"" Richard Sterling’s frantic shout was swallowed by the roar of the crowd.

Julian Vance’s hand clamped around Audrey's wrist with iron strength. ""Stay down,"" he commanded in her ear, dragging her behind the heavy mahogany podium just as a sharp, suppressed pop sounded from the balcony above. A chip of marble exploded from the column right where her head had been a second earlier.

A sniper. Michael hadn't just planned an economic takeover; he had hired contingencies in case Audrey uncovered the scheme before the signatures were dried.

""My father—"" Audrey gasped, her adrenaline surging.

""My men have him. He’s already in the service lift,"" Julian said, his breathing calm, measured, almost practiced under fire. ""You are the target, Sterling. You signed the operational control documents yesterday morning. With you gone and Michael under contract, the shares would default straight to his offshore trust.""

""I revoked his access!"" Audrey hissed, tearing off the floor-length veil that snagged on the podium edge.

""The digital registry doesn't update until midnight! Legally, you are still his fiancée until the courts open tomorrow!""

Julian pulled an automatic pistol from beneath his tuxedo jacket, flicking off the safety with a clean click. He peeked over the broken rim of the dais, fired two rapid shots into the darkened mezzanine, and pulled her toward the heavy velvet curtains masking the backstage service corridors.

They stumbled through the service entrance into a narrow, concrete stairwell illuminated only by buzzing red emergency lights. Audrey ripped the tulle hem of her wedding dress with her bare hands, freeing her ankles to move faster. She refused to be a helpless bride stumbling in silk.

""Where are the hotel guards?"" she demanded, heart hammering against her ribs.

""On Michael's payroll, most likely,"" Julian said as they descended the stairs two at a time. ""He didn't act alone, Audrey. Sophia is the daughter of Senator Hayes. The political backers behind this want Sterling's maritime shipping docks for unmonitored cargo.""

The magnitude of the betrayal hit Audrey like a cold wave. Michael was just the pawn. A much larger syndicate was moving to swallow her family's century-old empire.

They reached the subterranean parking garage. A black armored SUV sat idling, its hazard lights flashing. Julian unlocked the doors remotely, shoving her toward the passenger seat.

""Get in!"" he ordered.

Audrey reached for the door handle, but froze. Reflected in the tinted glass of the SUV, she saw the silhouette of a man emerging from the shadows of the concrete pillar behind Julian, holding a silenced pistol raised directly at the back of Vance’s skull.

""Julian, behind you!"" she screamed.
