Chapter 10 - Sins of the Groom

Michael stood thirty feet above them on the iron catwalk, the barrel of the shotgun trained directly on Audrey’s chest. His hands trembled violently, not from fear, but from the sudden, catastrophic realization that his entire life’s ambition had evaporated in less than twelve hours.

Behind him stepped Sophia Hayes, flanked by four armed private security guards. Unlike Michael, Sophia was composed, though a cruel, desperate fury darkened her features.

""You should have signed the paperwork, Audrey,"" Sophia called down, her voice ringing hollow against the corrugated walls. ""Did you really think a few leaked files would destroy my father? He sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee. By noon tomorrow, this entire warehouse will be declared a domestic terrorist cell. You, Julian, and your father will be buried in unnamed graves.""

Julian slowly reached for the sidearm resting on the crate beside him, but Audrey placed a firm, steady hand on his uninjured shoulder, stopping him. She looked up at Michael, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward into the center of the kill zone.

""You were a junior analyst when I met you, Michael,"" Audrey said, her voice clear and completely devoid of panic. ""You had twenty thousand dollars in student debt and wore cheap suits with plastic buttons. I gave you a name. I gave you power. And you sold me out for a senator's daughter and twenty pieces of silver.""

""You never respected me!"" Michael roared, his knuckles turning white on the trigger. ""To you, I was always the charity case! The boy from the south side you allowed into your gilded cage! You looked down on me every single day!""

""I loved you, you idiot,"" Audrey said softly, the words cutting deeper than any bullet. ""I gave you the keys to my empire because I believed you were better than this. But you were just another parasite waiting for a host.""

Michael’s face twisted in agony and humiliation. ""Shut up! Shut up!""

""Shoot her, Michael!"" Sophia commanded sharply from behind him. ""End this now, or my father cuts off your offshore escape route!""

Michael’s finger tightened on the trigger. Audrey didn't close her eyes. She stood like a queen facing her executioner, daring him to pull it.

A split second before Michael could fire, a piercing red laser dot appeared on his right cheek.

Michael froze.

From the dark waters behind the warehouse, the thunderous chop of twin helicopter rotors shattered the silence. The rusted sheet-metal windows along the harbor wall exploded inward as flashbang grenades rained down onto the catwalk.
