Chapter 10 - The Inevitable Siege

Dust cascaded from the rusted rafters as the heavy steel door began to warp under relentless impacts. ""They tracked the car’s black box,"" Ron cursed under his breath, scrambling to find any weapon among the warehouse debris. ""Leo, is there a way out? Another door?""
""No,"" Leo said, his voice flat. He was staring at the glass vials of amber liquid in the case. ""Only the pit.""
""The pit?"" Ron asked, running to the back of the chamber. There was a metal hatch leading down into the concrete substructure, completely flooded with murky harbor water. It was a death trap. Behind them, the primary doors gave way with a deafening screech of tearing metal.
Three operatives in heavy black armor advanced through the dust, their assault rifles raised. Leading them was a tall, lithe figure whose armor was devoid of insignia, save for a blood-red stripe across the helmet visor. ""Specimen 31,"" the leader’s modulated voice echoed through the vast hollow space. ""Return to containment. Your service is required.""

Ron stepped in front of Leo, brandishing a heavy iron pipe with shaking hands. ""Over my dead body!""
The leader didn't hesitate. With a casual flick of their wrist, a concussion blast erupted from their shoulder mount, launching Ron through the air to smash violently against the concrete pillars, rendering him instantly immobile.
