Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Concourse

The darkness was not absolute; emergency backup strips cast an eerie crimson line across the floorboards. The screams of fleeing shoppers drifted from outer corridors, muffled by the sheer cavernous emptiness of the central corridor. Leo stood unmoving over the groaning man whose wrist hung limply at his side. Ron fell to his knees, frantically scrambling backward against the polished wall of a closed jewelry boutique. ""What are you?"" Ron stammered, his fingers fumbling with his pepper spray canister.

The three standing men pulled combat knives from beneath their dark hoodies. These were no street toughs looking for petty theft; their blades were coated in non-reflective carbon steel. ""The old man trained another one,"" the bearded one whispered, lunging forward in a lethal thrust meant to gut the toddler cleanly.

Leo pivoted on his heel, using the toddler-sized height to duck under the sweeping blade. With blinding speed, his small heel snapped upward into the man’s knee. A sickening pop followed, dropping the attacker to his good leg. Leo struck the throat with an open palm—not killing, but silencing. The man choked, collapsing into a heap of dead weight.

The remaining two froze, realizing they were outmatched by someone whose head barely reached their waists. They backed away toward the escalators, their eyes wild with adrenaline and panic. Then, from the darkness of the shuttered food court above, a heavy iron ring fell and clattered against the floor, rolling to a stop right at Leo’s bare feet. Leo looked down at the familiar insignia etched into the iron, and for the first time, his stoic face crumbled into tears.
