Chapter 7 - The Sky Falling

The sedan swerved wildly as the weight on the roof shifted. Through the panoramic sunroof, Ron could see the terrifying shape of a person clinging to the roof rack—a man in full tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and holding a high-voltage breaching charge against the reinforced glass.

""Hold on!"" the driver yelled, violently jerking the steering wheel to the left and slamming on the brakes. The car spun in a vicious 360-degree slide on the wet pavement. Sparks flew as the sedan side-swiped a highway barrier, but the figure on the roof held fast, securing the magnetic explosive against the sunroof.

""The beacon!"" Leo shouted, his small fingers digging into his own skin. Without waiting for Ron, the child seized the scalpel and sliced behind his own ear with horrifying precision. Blood welled up instantly, staining his white karate gi, but Leo didn't even flinch. He pried out the glowing chip and threw it through the slightly cracked driver-side window into the night air.

The figure on the roof suddenly looked toward the falling tracker. In that split second of hesitation, the driver slammed into the back of an abandoned container truck, shearing the figure clean off the roof with a sickening thud. The breach charge detonated harmlessly fifty yards behind them in a fireball of smoke and fire. But before Ron could breathe, the driver slumped forward over the steering wheel, a stray rifle round having punched through the driver door directly into his heart.
