Chapter 13 - The True Commander

Leo lay motionless on the cold concrete, a thin trail of dark blood trickling from his nose. The leader walked forward slowly, drawing a sidearm and aiming it directly between the child’s closed eyes. ""A failed genetic line,"" the leader said coldly.
Ron, dragging his battered body across the debris, grabbed the leader’s heel with all the strength he had left. ""Leave... the kid... alone!""
The leader casually kicked Ron in the face, breaking his nose and pinning him beneath a heavy combat boot. ""You civilians always try to play hero,"" the leader said, pressing the gun closer to Leo’s head. ""He isn't a child. He's a biological weapon designed to end conflicts before they start. And he belongs to the Director.""

""The Director is dead!"" Ron coughed, spitting blood.
The leader chuckled—a sound dry and completely devoid of humanity. They reached up with one hand and slowly unlocked the seals of the armored helmet, lifting it off. Ron's eyes widened in horror. Beneath the helmet was an old, weathered face covered in deep scars—the very same grandfather from the photograph in the steel briefcase.
