""He was never dead,"" the old man said, looking down at his grandson with cold, clinical detachment. ""A necessary test of his field parameters. A mock escape to see if his conditioning could survive a real-world panic scenario.""
Ron felt his heart drop into a pit of absolute despair. ""You... you staged the mall? You had your own men slaughtered just to test him?""
""Men are replaceable,"" the old man replied, checking the status light on his forearm computer. ""Specimen 31 has exceeded our physical expectations by twelve percent, but his emotional attachment to you was an unforeseen error. An error I will now correct."" He aimed the weapon at Ron's skull, finger curling around the trigger.
On the floor, Leo’s fingers twitched. His eyes opened—not the dead black of the serum, but a burning, luminous amber that seemed to glow in the darkness. The little boy slowly pushed himself up from the concrete, his posture neither human nor animal, but an unnatural synthesis of terrifying precision.
