Chapter 10 - The Threshold of LifeThe drive to the county hospital was an exercise in absolute vigilance. Julian drove with intense focus, maneuvering the pickup through washouts and fallen branches, murmuring gentle encouragement every time Elena groaned through a contraction.

"Three more miles, Elena. You're doing incredible. Just breathe with me. In... out."
When they burst through the emergency room doors, hospital staff immediately swarmed the gurney. Elena gripped Julian’s shirt collar with sudden, desperate strength, pulling him down to her eye level.
"Don't leave," she demanded, her voice raw. "Don't you dare wait in the hall."

Julian looked up at the head nurse, then back down to Elena, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. "I’m not going anywhere. I am right here."
Inside the delivery room, stripped of titles, balance sheets, and pride, Julian held her hand through three hours of relentless labor. When her grip bruised his fingers, he didn't pull away; he leaned into the pressure, grateful for every ounce of pain he was permitted to share.
