The first week at the cottage was a haze of nursing, sleepless nights, and quiet routines. Julian did not ask to move in. He stayed in his small rented room in town, arriving at seven every morning with fresh groceries, chopping wood for the cast-iron stove, preparing meals, and leaving quietly after the evening feeding unless Elena asked him to stay.
One evening, while Leo slept soundly in the handmade pine crib beside Elena's bed, Julian prepared to leave for the night.
"Julian," Elena called softly from the sofa, holding a mug of herbal tea. "Sit down. Please."
He sat on the opposite armchair, his posture deferential.
"Why didn't you defend yourself?" Elena asked. "The day I left. You could have argued that you were working for our future. Most men would have."

Julian looked down at his calloused hands. "Because you were speaking the truth. I was hiding behind work because I was terrified of being inadequate as a father. I thought if I built a fortress of money, nobody could hurt us. I didn't see that I was locking you out in the cold."
Elena took a slow sip of tea, letting the silence settle—not as a weapon, but as a bridge.
