Chapter 8 - The ThunderstormMid-October brought an unseasonable gale off the Catskills, tearing down electrical lines and flooding the unpaved backroads.

The cottage lost power around nine in the evening. Elena lit emergency candles, listening to the wind rattle the old storm windows. An hour later, an unfamiliar, low-frequency pain rippled across the small of her back—rhythmic, tightening, unmistakable.
Her water broke ten minutes later.
She reached for her landline, but the dial tone was dead. Her cell phone showed zero bars of service; the cell tower at the mountain crest had lost its generator.

Panic, primal and cold, gripped her throat. The hospital was forty-five minutes away over flooded dirt roads. Another contraction hit, bringing her to her knees on the rug.
Through the deluge outside, two headlights cut through the rain-lashed driveway.
