Chapter 15 - Where The Light RemainsOn Leo’s first birthday, friends and neighbors gathered on the farmhouse lawn beneath string lights hung between the apple trees.

The child took his first unassisted steps on the clover lawn, wobbling bravely between his parents. Elena caught him as he tumbled, laughing, and lifted him into Julian’s arms.

As the sun set behind the Catskill mountains, painting the clouds in violet and rose, Julian looked at his wife. The delicate lines at the corners of Elena’s eyes spoke of nights spent soothing a teething toddler, but her gaze was clear, anchored, and warm.

"Thank you," Julian murmured, leaning down so his forehead rested gently against hers, Leo resting between their chests.

"For what?" she asked.

Elena smiled, looping her arm through his, their hands intertwining effortlessly. The platinum band on his finger caught the dying amber rays of the evening sun—not reflecting cold, hollow luxury, but holding the steady, quiet warmth of a home built to endure.
