Chapter 13 - The Broken CircleA month after Leo was born, the autumn leaves had turned vibrant amber and scarlet.

Julian was on the porch, planing a board for a wooden gate to keep the yard secure when Leo grew older. Elena came outside, wrapped in a thick wool cardigan, carrying the sleeping baby in a sling against her chest.

She reached into the pocket of her sweater and pulled out the platinum ring Julian had dropped onto his dresser the day she left—a piece she had quietly retrieved before packing her belongings months ago.

Julian stopped his plane, his eyes fixed on the metal.

"I know," Julian said, his voice thick. "I have enough wood for a lifetime, Elena."

She stepped forward, taking his right hand—the one marked by saw-nicks, hard work, and patient labor—and placed the ring back into his open palm.

"Don't put it on for the man you used to be," she said softly. "Put it on if you’re ready to stay present for the ordinary days."

Julian slipped the band back onto his finger. It fit differently now—tighter against his calloused knuckle, grounded and real.
