Chapter 5 - Unmaking a GiantResigning as active managing partner of a multi-billion-dollar fund was not simple, but Julian treated it like a surgical amputation. The board was furious; investors clamored for reassurance. Julian sat at the head of the conference table, listened to the uproar, and spoke calmly.
"I have spent ten years making you all wealthier," he said evenly. "I have not spent ten minutes learning how to be a father. I am stepping down to non-executive advisory. My decision is final."
He drove north the following dawn. He did not go to Elena’s door. He rented a small room above a hardware store in the adjacent town, ten miles away.

He bought a used pickup truck, leaving his luxury sedan in the city. Every morning, he took odd labor jobs with a local carpenter who repaired barn frames and restored antique furniture. His hands, softened by years of tap-dancing on touchscreens and signing fountain-pen contracts, blistered and bled. The physical exhaustion grounded him, burning away the manic, nervous cadence of corporate survival.
He was learning patience from the grain of timber.
