Chapter 9 - Through the RainJulian had seen the power lines fall along Route 9 and immediately drove toward the cottage, ignoring the flash-flood warnings. When he saw the darkness engulfing Elena’s home, he abandoned his truck at the foot of the washed-out driveway and ran through knee-deep mud to the porch.

He knocked firmly, his voice steady through the gale: "Elena! It's Julian. Are you alright?"

The door unlocked from the inside, and Elena stood there, pale, clinging to the frame, breathing in short, ragged gasps.

"Julian," she gasped, her knuckles white. "It’s time. The baby is coming now."

He didn't hesitate or panic. Dropping his wet coat on the porch, he stepped in, kicked off his boots, and gently supported her by the elbows. "I'm right here. The road down the valley is flooded, but the western ridge road is open. I checked it ten minutes ago. Can you walk to the truck if I carry your bags?"

"I don't know," she whispered, a tear tracing her cheek through a fresh wave of agony.

"Lean on me," Julian said, his voice a steady anchor against the howling wind. "I won't let you fall."
