Chapter 2 - The Architecture of NeglectIn the weeks following Elena's departure, Julian immersed himself in the only language he understood: work. He doubled down at the private equity firm, spending twenty hours a day in steel-and-glass conference rooms overlooking Manhattan. Yet, every metric failed to distract him.

His penthouse, once a symbol of his hard-fought ascent from working-class obscurity, had become an echo chamber. He wandered the corridors late at night, stopping before the nursery room door.

He had never painted it. The walls remained an industrial white. A disassembled Italian crib sat against the baseboard in flat-pack cardboard boxes, its tape yellowing. He had promised Elena three months ago that he would assemble it on a Sunday afternoon. That Sunday had been consumed by an emergency board meeting in Frankfurt.

Julian sat on the bare wooden floor of the unmade nursery, his neck tie undone, his tailored jacket crumpled on the floor. For thirty-two years, he had operated under the trauma of his own impoverished childhood, believing love was synonymous with material provision. His father had been bankrupt, broken, and beaten down by creditors; Julian had sworn his own children would never know the humiliation of scarcity.

Now, sitting in the midst of limitless wealth, Julian realized he had committed an even crueler mistake: he had traded his presence for a bank balance.
