Chapter 1 - The Silence After the Storm

The dining room fell into an immediate, suffocating silence. The faint clinking of silverware against fine porcelain from the surrounding guests ceased instantly. Amy stood frozen, the heavy burden of the gray baby carrier suddenly feeling lighter as her husband, Mark, took the weight of the dirty plates from her trembling hands. Her eyes met his—wide, glistening with unshed tears, and overflowing with exhaustion.

Mark’s breathing was heavy. He placed the heavy stack of plates onto a nearby sideboard with a firm, deliberate thud. Turning his body completely toward his mother, Eleanor, his jaw was set with a hard determination she had never seen before. Eleanor’s face, usually a mask of immaculate, cool authority, twitched. The sharp, dismissive composure she had maintained all evening cracked just enough to reveal her shock.

"Mark, don't be dramatic," Eleanor said quietly, her voice smooth like polished glass, though her knuckles turned white against her wine glass. "This is a family celebration. We have guests."

"That is precisely why I am speaking up," Mark replied, his voice calm but trembling with restrained fury. "My wife is not your servant. She is caring for our sick child."

Amy lowered her gaze, cradling baby Leo closer to her chest. She could feel the infant’s fever radiating through his soft onesie. She wanted nothing more than to retreat upstairs, away from the watchful eyes of high-society acquaintances who were now pretending to examine the floral arrangements. Mark reached out, his fingers gently brushing Amy’s shoulder.

"Go upstairs, sweetheart," Mark whispered gently. "I’ll handle this."

Amy didn't hesitate. She turned swiftly, her sneakers making no sound against the oriental rug as she hurried toward the grand staircase. As she mounted the steps, she heard Mark’s voice echoing firmly through the grand foyer: "Dinner is over, everyone. Thank you for coming."
