Chapter 4 - The Retreat to Simplicity

By late afternoon, the small family had packed their bags and returned to their modest two-bedroom apartment in the city. The contrast between Eleanor’s sprawling, silent mansion and their cozy, sunlit home was immediate.
Amy felt a visible weight lift from her shoulders the moment she stepped through their front door. The apartment smelled of vanilla and fresh paint. Small, thoughtful wooden toys rested in the corner of the living room, and family photographs filled the walls—pictures of their wedding, their trips to the coast, and simple candid moments.
Mark helped carry the crib parts into the baby room, meticulously reassembling them. As he tightened the final screw, he looked up at Amy, who was organizing Leo’s clothes in the dresser.
"Do you think I was too harsh on her?" Mark asked, a hint of vulnerability creeping into his voice.
Amy walked over and sat beside him on the rug. "You stood up for us, Mark. It was hard to hear, but it was necessary. She has held so much power over your choices for so long."

Mark nodded slowly. Growing up as the sole heir to the Vance estate after his father died, he had been conditioned to carry his mother's expectations without question. Pleasing her had been his life's implicit rule, until he saw the emotional toll it was taking on the woman he loved.
"It’s time I start building our own foundation," Mark said softly, taking Amy's hand. "No more living under her shadow."
