Chapter 8 - The Power of Forgiveness

When Mark returned home from work that evening, he was surprised to find Amy sitting on the couch with a thoughtful look on her face. He sat beside her, loosening his tie.

"How was your day?" he asked, rubbing his tired eyes.

"I went to see your mother today," Amy said quietly.

Mark stared at her in disbelief. "You went to the estate? Why, Amy? After how she treated you?"

"Because holding onto anger only keeps us chained to the past," Amy replied softly. "We talked, Mark. Really talked. She told me about how terrifying it was when your father was sick."

Mark fell silent, looking down at the floor. "She never talked to me about that time. She just expected me to be perfect."

"She was terrified of failing you," Amy explained, placing her hand over his. "She spent years wearing armor to protect you. Now, she doesn't know how to take it off. She needs to know that you love her for who she is, not just for how well she manages the family name."

Mark leaned back against the cushions, processing her words. The resentment he had carried since the night of the dinner party began to dissolve, replaced by a deep understanding of his mother's unspoken pain.

"Thank you, Amy," Mark said softly, bringing her hand to his lips. "You have a capacity for grace that I am still learning."
