Chapter 13 - Lessons of the Heart

As winter set in, the warmth within the family continued to grow. Leo celebrated his first birthday—not with an elaborate, press-covered event at the estate, but with a cozy party in the apartment filled with laughter, wooden toys, and a homemade cake that Amy and Eleanor had baked together.
Sitting around the living room, Eleanor held a small framed photograph. It was a picture taken by Mark during their finger-painting afternoon months ago—a candid shot of Eleanor, Amy, and Leo covered in red and blue paint, smiling radiantly.
"I spent forty years believing that perfection was the only way to earn love," Eleanor said softly, tracing the glass frame with her thumb. "I was so wrong."
Amy placed a cup of warm tea next to her. "Perfection keeps people at a distance, Eleanor. Imperfection is where connection lives."

Eleanor looked up at Amy, her eyes shining with deep appreciation. "Thank you, Amy. Thank you for not giving up on me when I gave you every reason to walk away."
"We’re family," Amy said simply, offering a gentle smile. "We don't give up on each other."
