Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

A week passed in quiet tranquility. Leo was completely healthy again, filling the small apartment with cheerful baby babbles. However, the emotional rift between Mark and his mother remained unbridged. Eleanor had not called, and Mark refrained from reaching out, granting them all necessary space.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Amy received an unexpected visitor. The doorbell rang, and when she opened it, she found Arthur, the elderly family lawyer who had served the Vance estate for over thirty years.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said politely, holding a leather briefcase. "May I come in for a brief moment?"

Amy nodded, surprised, and offered him a seat in the living room.

"I am not here on official business from Eleanor," Arthur clarified immediately, sensing her apprehension. "I came on my own accord because I care deeply for Mark, as I did for his late father."

"Is something wrong?" Amy asked, setting down a cup of tea for him.

"Eleanor is a complicated woman, Amy," Arthur explained gently. "When Mark's father passed away twenty years ago, the family business was on the brink of collapse. Eleanor had to harden herself to protect the legacy and survive in a world that wasn't kind to single mothers in corporate circles."

Amy listened quietly as Arthur spoke. "She learned to equate emotional control and perfection with safety. When she sees you—someone who leads with heart, openness, and vulnerability—it frightens her. She sees it as weak, because weakness was dangerous for her."

The attorney’s words resonated deeply within Amy, offering a rare glimpse into the fortress Eleanor had built around herself.
