Chapter 2 - A Quiet Sanctuary

Upstairs in the dim, tranquil nursery, the frantic energy of the lower floor faded into a distant murmur. Amy gently unclipped the baby carrier, easing Leo onto the changing table. Her hands were still shaking. She adjusted the cooling pad on his forehead and administered the fever reducer medication the pediatrician had prescribed earlier that afternoon.

Leo let out a soft, whimpering sigh, his eyelids fluttering closed as the soothing atmosphere took effect. Amy sat down in the wooden rocking chair beside the crib, burying her face in her hands. The hot tears she had suppressed all evening finally broke free.

For three years, since marrying Mark, she had tried desperately to win Eleanor’s approval. Coming from a modest background, Amy had always felt like an outsider in the pristine, old-money world of the Vance family. Eleanor’s quiet criticisms—about her clothes, her parenting, her humble career as an elementary school teacher—had steadily eroded Amy’s confidence.

The nursery door creaked open softly. Mark stepped inside, shutting the door quietly behind him. The noise downstairs had completely vanished; the guests had clearly departed in uncomfortable haste. Mark looked utterly drained, his dark suit jacket discarded and his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar.

He walked over and knelt beside Amy’s rocking chair, resting his hands on her knees.

"I am so sorry, Amy," he said, his eyes filled with genuine remorse. "I should have seen it sooner. I shouldn't have let her treat you like that."

Amy looked up at him, wiping her cheeks. "She makes me feel so small, Mark. I tried so hard tonight."

"You don't need to earn her respect by letting her walk over you," Mark said softly. "Starting tonight, things change."
