Chapter 10 - Rebuilding Bridges

Over the next few months, small but meaningful changes began to take shape within the Vance family. The rigid expectations that had defined their interactions began to soften, replaced by genuine efforts to connect.
Eleanor began visiting the apartment on weekends. At first, she arrived wearing formal suits, clearly uncomfortable in the small space. But gradually, she began dressing down, exchanging her stiff blouses for soft sweaters.
She watched in amazement as Amy taught Leo how to paint with non-toxic finger paints on the kitchen floor.
"Won't that ruin the tile?" Eleanor asked timidly on one of her early visits, holding her handbag tightly.
"It washes right off with water," Amy chuckled, handing Eleanor an apron. "Wanna try?"
Eleanor hesitated, looking at her manicured nails. Then, with a hesitant smile, she unbuttoned her designer jacket, tied the apron around her waist, and sat on the floor beside her grandson.

When Mark walked into the kitchen an hour later, he stopped in his tracks. His mother was sitting cross-legged on the floor, red paint smeared on her cheek, laughing genuinely as Leo slapped a paint-covered hand onto a piece of paper.
Mark looked at Amy, his heart swelling with a profound sense of gratitude.
