Chapter 1 - The Audio That Cut Like Glass

The subterranean chill of the concrete garage pressed against Sarah’s bare collarbones. Every ragged breath tore at her chest as sharp, rhythmic contractions rippled across her swollen belly. She leaned against the damp pillar, knuckles white, barely able to support her full weight. Behind her, six-year-old Lily clutched the smartphone to her chest like a shield, her hazel eyes fixed on the man standing before them.

Victor Vance had not blinked once. The silver-haired patriarch stood flanked by two hulking bodyguards whose shadows swallowed the fluorescent light above. At his polished Italian leather shoes, Julian scrambled backward across the oil-stained floor, his blue tailored jacket dusted with white powder from the knocked-over utility buckets. Next to him, his mother Evelyn clawed frantically at the pile of fallen blankets, trying to salvage her shattered dignity.

""Grandpa,"" Lily whispered, her little voice cutting through the echoes of dripping pipes. ""I recorded Daddy talking to Grandma. In the hospital room.""

Julian gasped, lunging forward. ""Victor, listen to me! Don't listen to a child—she has no idea what she’s—""

A single gesture from Victor halted Julian mid-breath. Victor reached down, his heavy signet ring gleaming under the flickering bulb, and took the phone from Lily's trembling fingers. He pressed play.

A tiny speaker filled the cavernous garage with Julian’s hushed, urgent voice: ""She won’t survive the scheduled delivery if the anesthesia dose is altered just enough. The doctor is paid. Once Sarah is gone, her father’s entire trust fund defaults to Lily, and as her sole guardian, Evelyn and I control the board. Victor won't suspect a thing until the assets are liquidated overseas.""

Evelyn's voice followed, colder than surgical steel: ""Make sure the baby doesn't make it either. We don't need another Vance breathing down our necks.""

Sarah’s knees buckled. A sound escaped her throat—a dry, strangled sob that shattered into the silence. Julian was staring at the floor, his face drained of color, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly.

Victor looked down at the two pathetic figures sprawling among spilled cleaning supplies and grey industrial blankets. When he finally spoke, his gravelly voice carried the weight of a stone tomb sealing shut.

""Thirty years I built this empire,"" Victor murmured, his tone devoid of rage, which made it infinitely more terrifying. ""I gave you my daughter. I gave you my name, Julian. And you plotted to bury her beneath my feet.""

""Victor, please, it was just talk—we were desperate, the debt—"" Evelyn cried out, her manicured fingers clutching Victor’s pant cuff.

Victor stepped back without looking down, wrenching his leg free as if scraping off filth. He turned his gaze toward Sarah, whose face was beaded with cold sweat.

""Call Dr. Mercer,"" Victor told the guard on his right. ""Private suite. Level 4 security. If anyone without Vance clearance steps within fifty feet of my daughter or granddaughter, shoot them.""

As Sarah was lifted into the elevator, she looked back at her husband. Julian wasn't looking at her; he was staring at Victor's second bodyguard, whose hand had just vanished into his tailored coat.
