Chapter 2 - The Redacted Will

The smell of antiseptic failed to drown the scent of rain drifting through the penthouse suite at St. Jude’s Private Pavilion. Sarah lay hooked to three monitors, the steady rhythmic beep of the fetal heart monitor the only thing tethering her to sanity. Lily sat curled on the edge of the bed, her small fingers laced through her mother’s limp hand.

Victor stood at the floor-to-ceiling glass, gazing down at the glistening wet streets of Manhattan below. His black trench coat hung over a leather chair; his cuffs were rolled back, revealing old faded scars along his forearms—reminders of the decades spent carving his empire out of the city's ruthless underworld before legitimizing it as a shipping conglomerate.

A soft knock broke the silence. Marcus, Victor’s longtime legal counsel and fixer, slipped into the room carrying a leather folio tied with crimson ribbon.

""The doctor confirms the sedative found in Sarah's prenatal vitamins,"" Marcus said quietly, keeping his eyes down. ""A compound that causes sudden uterine rupture under high-stress labor. Julian bought it through an intermediary in Zurich three weeks ago.""

Sarah closed her eyes, tears leaking into the corners of her mouth. ""Why, Dad? We gave him everything. A seat on the board. The Southampton estate. What else did he want?""

""He wanted the crown without bearing the scars,"" Victor replied, turning around. His expression was carved of granite. ""Julian never understood that money doesn't make a man dangerous. Loyalty makes a man untouchable. Betrayal makes him a target.""

Victor took the folio from Marcus and set it on Sarah’s blanket. He flipped to the final annex, pointing at a single notarized signature dated six days prior.

""This is Julian’s real operation,"" Victor said. ""He didn't just want your trust, Sarah. He pledged twenty percent of our commercial port leases to the Kozlov syndicate as collateral for a private hedge fund loan. If he defaults—or if he dies—the Russians legally seize our private docks.""

Sarah’s eyes widened through the haze of medication. ""The Kozlovs? Dad, they’ve been trying to break into the eastern terminal for ten years. If they take the docks, they control the supply line.""

""Julian sold out our family to buy their protection,"" Victor said, his hand resting gently on Lily’s brown hair. ""He thought if he orchestrated your death, he could hide behind Kozlov’s soldiers before I discovered the missing collateral.""

Suddenly, the red emergency lamp above the door flared to life. The sharp wail of a perimeter alarm pierced the quiet corridor outside, accompanied by the distinct thud of heavy boots and a muffled gunshot.
