Chapter 6 - Into the Industrial Fringe

The city above was bathed in pouring rain, rain that slicked the asphalt of the old shipping district along the river. Clara was strapped into the back seat of the black SUV, every muscle in her abdomen seizing with contractions that tore screams from her throat.
Beside her, little Lily wept silently, her small hands clutching her mother’s trembling knuckles. In the driver's seat sat a man Clara had trusted for five years—her personal chauffeur, Thomas.
""Thomas... why?"" Clara gasped between waves of searing pain. ""My father treated you like family... he paid for your sister's surgery...""
Thomas did not look back in the rear-view mirror. His hands were white-knuckled on the steering wheel. ""Ravenwood has my family, Miss Clara. If you don't arrive at the warehouse alive and signed, they bury my children in the swamp.""
""My father will hunt you down,"" Clara warned, her vision blurring as another contraction seized her spine. ""He will find every single person involved.""

""Your father is dead in the parking deck,"" Thomas said coldly as the vehicle skidded through the gates of an abandoned meatpacking facility.
As the vehicle halted, the rear doors were wrenched open from outside. Standing in the doorway was Julian, holding a medical clipboard and accompanied by two men in scrub suits carrying surgical equipment.
