Chapter 1 - The Evidence on the Concrete

The heavy silence of the concrete parking garage was punctuated only by the dripping of overhead water pipes and the harsh fluorescent buzz. Julian dropped to his knees, his tailored navy suit scraping painfully against the rough floor. Beside him, Eleanor frantically pushed away the damp car-wash blankets that had collapsed around her pearl necklace, her manicured fingers shaking. Between them stood Victor Vance—a patriarch whose weathered face had commanded empires and crushed rivals without raising his voice.

Behind Victor, his daughter Clara leaned against a structural column, her hands cradling her swollen nine-month belly. Each labored breath she took sent a wave of agony across her pale face. Beside her, six-year-old Lily held the smartphone out like a shield, her hazel eyes glistening with raw terror and vindication. The phone’s cracked display was still paused on Julian’s smiling mouth, captured just minutes earlier upstairs as he whispered promises of wealth to Eleanor while orchestrating Clara’s staged medical disappearance.

""Victor, please, listen to me,"" Eleanor stammered, scrambling to her feet and dusting off her champagne jacket with false dignity. ""Julian was under pressure. You don't understand the board members, the takeover—""

Victor stepped forward. The heavy soles of his leather shoes made no sound on the oil-stained pavement, but the gesture forced both conspirators backward. He reached down with his ring-laden left hand and gently retrieved the phone from Lily's trembling fingers. Without turning around, he motioned toward the elevator behind him.

""Mark. Take Clara and Lily upstairs to my private physician,"" Victor said, his tone icy and dangerously calm. ""Keep the armored SUV running outside.""

Clara tried to speak, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. ""Dad... they took the offshore ledgers. They weren't just trying to get rid of me... they made a deal with—""

A sudden metallic screech echoed from the parking gate ramp behind them, cutting her off as two black sedans barreled down the concrete incline at full speed.
