Chapter 7 - Fuel and Fire

The air in the hospital's sub-basement smelled of damp earth, hydraulic oil, and sulfur. Heavy cast-iron pipes snaked across the low ceiling, groaning under the weight of three million gallons of municipal water. In the center of the cavernous concrete chamber stood the massive primary fuel tank—two hundred thousand gallons of industrial diesel designed to power St. Jude’s during a catastrophic blackout.
Julian stood on the steel gantry ten feet above the floor, clutching an emergency marine flare in his right hand. The phosphorus tip hissed with a venomous red glow, dripping white-hot slag onto the metal grating.
His tailored suit was shredded at the elbows, his shirt soaked through with sweat and dried arterial spray. His eyes were wide, twitching, completely swallowed by manic delirium.
""Stay back, Victor!"" Julian shrieked as the heavy fire door swung open.
Victor Vance walked in alone. He had shed his suit jacket, wearing only his dark vest and rolled-up shirt, his hands resting easily at his sides. Behind him, the door clicked shut, sealing them both inside the concrete tomb.
""You won't drop it,"" Victor said, his tone as casual as if they were discussing port tariffs over morning coffee. ""Diesel has a high flash point, Julian. A flare might not ignite the fumes immediately, but once it catches, the pressure inside this room will liquefy your lungs before you can scream.""
Julian laughed—a high, broken sound that echoed off the steel vat. ""You think I care? You took everything! My mother is in a federal holding cell, Kozlov's dogs are hunting my accounts, and Sarah... Sarah looked at me like I was a cockroach!""
""You are a cockroach,"" Victor said, taking two slow, deliberate steps toward the foot of the gantry ladder. ""You took a seat at a table built by men who bled for every brick, and you thought you could overturn it with a stolen prescription pad.""
""I was supposed to be the heir!"" Julian spat, waving the flare wildly, sparks raining down toward the overflow drain. ""I was supposed to run Vance Logistics!""
""A real heir protects the blood,"" Victor said coldly. ""He doesn't poison his pregnant wife to pay off a casino debt.""
Julian’s face twisted into an ugly sneer. ""Well, she won't enjoy her victory for long. When this tank goes, the entire west wing collapses into the street. Her, your little spy Lily, and that newborn rat. We all burn together, old man.""

Julian raised the flare high above his head, his fingers loosening around the red casing.
Victor didn't flinch. He reached behind his back, pulled a sleek, heavy wrench from the maintenance hook beside the ladder, and threw it with pinpoint, devastating force.
